Duniway's Annual Fall Giving Campaign is one of the Duniway Foundation's two main fundraisers to fund teaching positions at Duniway.
The money raised last year by the Foundation is now funding salaries for five
part-time Educational Assistant positions. EAs provide critical support for our teachers including facilitating small group sessions and reviewing student assignments.
Approximately one-third (32%) of funds raised go to the Fund for PPS to provide equity in funding for district schools that do not have the benefit of a foundation such as ours. Your contribution not only supports Duniway-- it also promotes equity across our district.
Please donate online, or bring a check made out to Duniway Foundation to the school office. Online donation allows us to reach a much wider audience than in prior years and we encourage you to forward this to other family members, friends, or business leaders.
We encourage you to give what you are able. Across our school community, some families are able to donate more, some less. In past years, donations have ranged from $25 to $5000.
We would like every family to participate during the campaign. You do not have to donate to participate! If you are not able to donate this year, submit the Participate form to log your support for the Foundation. The one classroom with the most participation will receive an ice cream party!
Any contribution, at whatever level possible, makes a difference in the quality of your child’s education. Direct donations and corporate matching combined help the school hire essential staff members to support our teachers and students!

The Duniway Foundation’s Annual Campaign is one of the primary ways that we raise money for Duniway teaching and assistant positions not funded by Portland Public Schools and for other educational programs.
I was able to use the money raised last year by the Foundation to fund salaries for a full time teacher, and six Educational Assistants (EAs), one for every grade level, providing critical support for teachers and students. This fundraiser is one of the ways we keep Duniway’s student-teacher ratios low, making a direct impact on the quality of education for your kids.
You may remember green envelopes in the past, but this year contributions can be made online. I encourage every family to donate what they are able to this year. As we work to support students throughout the transition back to in person learning, I know that these funds will be essential to continue to provide the best support for your kids.
Emily Fehrenbach is the Educational Assistant supporting the first grade classroom here at Duniway. This is her 2nd year as an EA -- her first being a float EA prior to the pandemic in Spring 2020. She is also the mom of a Duniway third grader.
Growing up in Portland, Emily ventured off to the University of Texas at Austin where she received a degree in Applied Learning and Development with a minor in English. She has years of classroom and tutoring experience and enjoys bringing her hobbies of music, art, and reading into the classroom to help cultivate a love for learning whenever she can get a chance.
When not supporting the first graders and their teachers at Duniway you can find her spending time with her family out in nature, sketching & painting various local scenes, or even playing the guitar or listening to live music. She feels so lucky to get to work with your first graders and their teachers and is excited to watch them all grow and learn this school year. Go Dragons!
Hello! My name is Cathy Hilburg and I am the 2nd grade EA. This is my 3rd year working with the 2nd grade team. I am loving every minute of my time supporting your 2nd graders on reading, writing, math and anything else the 2nd grade team needs. In previous years I have taught preschool and 4th grade. I have a degree in Adventure Recreation and a Masters of Arts in Teaching. I have two of my own children; one of which is at Duniway in 4th grade.
I feel so grateful to be a part of the Duniway family and working in the amazing school my children have attended in the community that I love. Thank you all so much for supporting the EA’s and our Duniway Community! I am truly honored to be a part of it all!
Hi, I am Sue Ledgerwood, the EA supporting third grade. This is my fourth year as an EA for PPS and third year at Duniway. I grew up in Seattle, then graduated from the University of Portland before becoming the Chief Compliance Officer and Manager of Customer Service for an investment advisor. After my children were born, I discovered a passion for working with kids and did so in a volunteer capacity for years.
I have been very involved with my children’s school and PTA (including two years as President), but my favorite volunteer hours were the ones spent in the classroom or working with kids. I am very excited to be working with your children this year!
Hello my name is Christy Suib. This is my 6th year as an EA at Duniway. As a mother of three children in PPS, I am very aware of the strengths, challenges, and absolute wonder of elementary-aged students. With the new school year underway, I continue to be amazed by students' perseverance, compassion and willingness to help and teach each other.
I am also tuned into the challenges and hardships these students face. With my past work experience with at-risk and marginalized youth in Portland, including running programs for homeless, runaway, and youth involved in the Juvenile Justice System, I am passionate about young people and creating equitable access to education and learning. This always remains in the forefront of my work.
Hello Duniway families! My name is Jessica Dumas and I’m so excited to be returning as the 5th grade this year as an Educational Assistant. As a former teacher, EA, Duniway parent volunteer, and Eastmoreland resident, I truly know how special Duniway is to our community. It’s a special place full of people who really care about each other and endeavor to make it the best learning environment for your children….every single year! As a parent to two Duniway grads, I also bring a sense of understanding and gratitude for this generous, highly-skilled staff who care so deeply for our children.
I am thrilled to support such a strong team of educators who are at the top of their game, creating engaging activities and challenging lessons to reach all students…and here often is where my role fits in. I am fortunate to support that unique engagement, whether it’s working with a small group on a differentiated spelling lesson or teaching a small pullout algebra lesson, your teachers have your kids’ needs at the heart of their planning, and I get to support that targeted work with challenge or scaffolding where needed.
I am thrilled to be once again part of the wonderful Duniway community. Go Dragons!
